21 Physical Therapy Glossary terms

This glossary contains the words people can use or define the field of study: physical therapy.

care
noun
the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something.
Example: If medical CARE is available for the treatment of a potentially deadly genotype, the strength of selection against the otherwise deleterious allele is negligible.

clinical
adjective
Relating to the observation and treatment of actual patients rather than theoretical or laboratory studies.
Example: Abstract Methods by which Helicobacter pylori contribute to disease are relatively unknown, but a link between infection and CLINICAL symptoms, such as gastric ulcer and cancer are clear.

diagnosis
noun
The process of identifying a disease, condition, or injury from its signs and symptoms. A health history, physical exam, and tests, such as blood tests, imaging tests, and biopsies, may be used to help make a diagnosis.
Example: PTs use an individual's history and physical examination to arrive at a DIAGNOSIS and establish a management plan.

Primary Prevention—intervening before health effects occur, through. measures such as vaccinations, altering risky behaviors (poor eating. habits, tobacco use), and banning substances known to be associated.
Example: Health promotion and DISEASE PREVENTION programs can empower individuals to make healthier choices and reduce their risk of disease and disability.

Electrodiagnostic

The medical subspecialty that applies neurophysiologic techniques for the evaluation of patients with potential impairment of the nervous, neuromuscular, and/or muscular systems.
Example: Investigations: ELECTRODIAGNOSTIC tests are used to scientifically confirm the diagnosis by showing the slowing of nerve conduction between the forearm and fingers.

One's ability to execute daily activities with optimal performance, endurance, and strength with the management of disease, fatigue, and stress and reduced sedentary behavior.
Example: The support of wellbeing and FITNESS assists an individual with being in the overall condition of wellbeing and prosperity.

The act of interfering with the outcome or course especially of a condition or process.
Example: As her health worsened, her daughters considered staging an INTERVENTION.

Example: The use of combination chemotherapy in the MANAGEMENT of breast cancer.

A structured approach to delivering hands-on physical therapy within a biopsychosocial framework.
Example: Joint mobilization and manipulation are two of the most common types of MANUAL THERAPY techniques our physical therapists implement.

The ability to move or be moved freely and easily.
Example: One of the most important things you can do to help someone with MOBILITY problems and fear of falling is to encourage physical activity.

Relating to or denoting the musculature and skeleton together.
Example: His chest, on examination (anteriorly and posteriorly), was symmetrical with no evidence of scars, asymmetry, or MUSCULOSKELETAL abnormality e.g. scoliosis.

The branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system.

The branch of medicine dealing with the correction of deformities of bones or muscles.

A person qualified to treat disease, injury, or deformity by physical methods such as massage, heat treatment, and exercise; a physical therapist.
Example: The clinics are multi-disciplinary and are usually staffed by specialist doctors, nurses, psychologists and or psychiatrists, social workers as well as with PHYSIOTHERAPISTS and dietitians with an interest in CF.

The likely outcome or course of a disease; the chance of recovery or recurrence.

The action of restoring someone to health or normal life through training and therapy after imprisonment, addiction, or illness.
Example: In stroke REHABILITATION significant gains can be achieved in the days and weeks following stroke with therapeutic nursing intervention in combination with more formalised REHABILITATION regimes (Gibbon, 2002) thus nurses have a significant role (Mitchell & Moore, 2004).

a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise.
Example: SPORT MEDECINE healthcare providers have special training to restore function to injured patients so they can get moving again as soon as possible.

Example: TREATMENTS for chronic illnesses focus on reducing symptoms and preventing or delaying complications. If you stop treatment, these may occur more quickly, which could have a major impact not only on your quality of life, but also on your life expectancy.
